Laura
Siegemund and
Vera Zvonareva secured the doubles championship at the
WTA Finals
by defeating Nicole Melichar Martinez and Ellen Perez 6-4, 6-4 in a thrilling
match.
An exciting
showdown took place in the doubles final of the WTA Finals. It featured the
6th-seeded pair of Siegemund and Zvonareva against the 8th-seeded duo of
Melichar and Perez. The latter pair had come close to missing out on the
Finals, barely securing their spot just days before the tournament by a margin
of only 15 points over the duo of Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend.
Siegemund
and Zvonareva took the early advantage with a break in the third game, which
proved enough to maintain the lead through their service games throughout the
set. Despite both pairs having several break opportunities, they couldn't
convert, and the set ended 6-4 in favor of Siegemund and Zvonareva.
In the
second set, they once again went ahead with a break in the third game, but
Melichar and Perez mounted a comeback by breaking back. However, in the
following game, Zvonareva and Siegemund seized the momentum with another break.
With a 4-2
lead, they didn't give their opponents any chances to break back, eventually
holding their serves to close out the match 6-4, 6-4.
This
victory will allow the 35-year-old veteran
Laura Siegemund to achieve her
career-best doubles ranking position, now ranked as world No. 5. As for her
39-year-old partner, she will equal her career-high ranking of world No. 9 in
doubles.
The
Russian-German duo secured their third title of the season and their sixth
title playing together, including the 2020 US Open, where one of their
opponents was Melichar, although she was partnered with China's Xu Yifan at
that time.
