While not as emphatic as losing only one game against Ella Seidel, it was still
Aryna Sabalenka at her best against another teenager on Wednesday morning as she swept aside Brenda Fruhvirtova 6-3, 6-2 at the 2024
Australian Open without having to wait until past midnight to play in this case.
Sabalenka in seeing off Seidel had the second slot in the Night Session, but instead it is Novak Djokovic who will play second tonight as fans will likely stay in earnest for the World No.1. But it was the Belarusian defending champion who set about her business in supreme fashion.
Many feared for the 16-year-old before the match began mainly due to Sabalenka's previous display and how she showed her experience and it was a similarly impressive outing from the World Number Two.
To start the tie, she saved a break point and then broke Fruhvirtova's serve to go 2-0 up. But was broken straight back fairly emphatically which would've had many thinking could the Czech ace make this competitive at least. It continued to be easy service holds for both until the back end of the set where Sabalenka's perseverance paid off and she was rewarded with a break and from there the set.
She went a double break up in the second and looked to be heading rapidly towards the finishing line at 3-0 up. Fruhvirtova kept hold of her serve and racked up another game at 5-2 down. But Sabalenka eased through her service game next up to seal the win. Next up is likely another simple test en route to the latter stages with Lesia Tsurenko or Rebeka Masarova awaiting. But for now, the defending champion rolls on.
