Mirra Andreeva continues to dazzle heading into the 2024 season with the WTA Newcomer of the Year sensationally eliminating Liudmila Samsonova at the
Brisbane International.
The 16-year-old sealed the tie 6-2, 6-1 in stunning fashion on Wednesday afternoon after taking down Diana Shnaider earlier this week only losing five games in that match. Next was the fourth seed and one of her best wins.
Andreeva and Samsonova held early on in the tie as the latter led 2-1. But the former bided her time winning five consecutive games to seal the opening set 6-2. While also saving two break points in the eighth game of the opening set to fire past Samsonova.
She continued to be rampant and went 4-0 up and nearly broke for a 5-0 lead. But Samsonova won four points in a row to win her first game in nearly nine. But it was the only one of the second set as Andreeva won eight straight points to conclude the tie. It is another top 15 win and it is a big chance to reach the latter stages with Arina Rodionova who saw off Sofia Kenin next up in Brisbane so albeit a player in form, a tie she will expect to win.
