Iga Swiatek led Poland to victory and a Quarter-Final spot at the 2024
United Cup with the mixed doubles in particular seeing the bakery open for the New Year with a double bagel 6-0, 6-0 as they destroyed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Sara Sorribes Tormo.
Hubert Hurkacz opened up against Davidovich Fokina in the singles and won the opening set 6-3, but lost the following two as Davidovich Fokina opened up with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. But the optimism likely felt by ADF waned as Swiatek was in true and utter beast mode from there on out.
Swiatek faced off against Sara Sorribes Tormo who has a poor record anyway against the World No.1 and this did not improve in the United Cup as Swiatek eased through despite facing four break points in the opening set 6-2, 6-1. This was followed by the mixed doubles.
It was even more emphatic for Swiatek and Hurkacz as they destroyed their opponents and did not allow them to win a single game completing the tie 6-0, 6-0. They have now confirmed their spot in the Quarter-Finals and await other results and it will be the best runner-up from the three groups so it could be China for instance, or Great Britain or even Spain again who won their opening tie so could yet qualify. Based on today's evidence though, Spain won't want any part of a potential rematch.
