Iga Swiatek addressed the high number of top-ranked players falling in the early rounds of Wimbledon and disagreed with the opinion about inconsistency in the WTA. Swiatek is one of only four top-10 players remaining alive in the tournament, as play has barely reached the third round.
The five-time Grand Slam champion reached the third round after overcoming Polina Kudermetova (7-5, 6-1) and Caty McNally (5-7, 6-2, 6-1). The several surprising exits have shaken up the women's draw in the first few days, with three of the top five seeds already out.
On the men's side, things weren't much different, with four top-10 tennis players eliminated in the first two days and only 7 players within the top-15 still in contention. Alexander Zverev, Jack Draper, and Holger Rune were among the big names eliminated early at Wimbledon.
Regarding this, Swiatek was asked if she believes this will be the norm in future Grand Slam tournaments, with constant surprises and early exits for top players. "I have no idea what’s gonna happen in the future,” she said. “And also, I remember you guys asking me questions why there’s no consistency on the WTA. I don’t feel that.”
Currently, only four top-10 players remain in contention, led by Aryna Sabalenka (No. 1) and Iga Swiatek (No. 4). Mirra Andreeva (No. 7) and Emma Navarro (No. 10) also join them.
Among those who fell in the first round are Coco Gauff (No. 2), Jessica Pegula (No. 3), Zheng Qinwen (No. 6), and Paula Badosa (No. 9). During Thursday and Friday, Jasmine Paolini (No. 5) was added to the second-round exits, and Madison Keys (No. 8) in the third round.
“Me and Aryna and Coco have been winning a lot,” stated Swiatek. “Sometimes we lose early, because the schedule is pretty crazy. You can’t win everything. I feel like on grass there are many upsets every year. It’s a surface we shouldn’t really... I don’t know. It doesn’t really matter what happens here when we go to the hard court season I would say.”
The world No. 4 will return to the court this Saturday against American Danielle Collins, with whom she has a favorable 7-2 head-to-head record. However, their last encounter—just two months ago at the Rome Open—went in favor of the 31-year-old American.
