From the semi-finals of Roland Garros and even the second week of
Wimbledon last year to being dumped out in the opening round at the 2024 edition,
Mirra Andreeva is going home early after being defeated by
Brenda Fruhvirtova.
Fruhvirtova defeated her fellow 17-year-old 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round. Andreeva is usually a sure fire bet to make the second week as she has done so at all of her Grand Slams so far. But it is not a great return to a surface that she excelled on last season.
She reached the Last 16 and only lost to Madison Keys and perhaps looked her best on grass. But her recent form since her Roland Garros breakout run has seen early losses and that has continued. It is not a great comeback either for Conchita Martinez to the tournament that she won as both a player and also a coach working with Garbine Muguruza.
Next up for Andreeva will be the Olympic Games with the Russian accepting an invite as a neutral athlete to play in Paris over the coming weeks and she will aim to rekindle the form she showed there after a disappointing Wimbledon. For Fruhvirtova, it is finally acting on her potential with her and sister Linda lauded for a long time as the next breakout stars of women's tennis.
But it hasn't happened quite yet. It is her biggest win though thus far and sees her move through to a tie against Paula Badosa who saw off Karolina Muchova earlier this evening. The winner of that tie faces Daria Kasatkina or Lily Miyazaki. While ANdreeva at least will move through in name with her sister Erika Andreeva in late as a lucky loser after Aryna Sabalenka's withdrawal and thriving against Emina Bektas. The same couldn't be said about the younger higher ranked sister.
