Mirra
Andreeva Continues Her Dominant Run, Defeats
Jasmine Paolini to Reach
Cincinnati Open Quarterfinals The teenager seems to have found her best form
after defeating the 2-time Grand Slam runner-up 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in an impressive
comeback.
The young
Russian has reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 for the second time in her
career. The first time was a couple of months ago at the Madrid Open, where she
fell to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. This time, she will challenge World
No. 1
Iga Swiatek.
Andreeva stuns Paolini to reach QF
In what was
a highly anticipated round of 16 match, the battle was close from the start.
Andreeva (No. 24) began with an early break, but Paolini (No. 5) quickly
recovered it in the following game. The Italian took the lead in the 6th game
(4-2), which was enough to secure the set later on with a 6-3 scoreline.
Paolini
initially found solutions to the teenager's powerful serve, but in the second
set, the Russian added more variety to her game. Andreeva posted impressive
serving stats in the second set, landing 65% of her first serves and winning
94% of them (16/17). On the other hand, Paolini struggled, managing only 59% of
first serves and winning just 47% of them.
Andreeva
kept the pressure on Paolini's serve, despite the Italian constantly managing
to hold her serve under difficult circumstances. Nonetheless,
Mirra Andreeva
secured a break in the 8th game and then closed out the set 6-3, forcing a
decider.
The final
set was entirely in Andreeva's favor, as she took breaks in the 1st and 5th
games. Although Paolini recovered one of the breaks, it wasn't enough for a
comeback, as she then lost her serve for the third consecutive time. Despite
saving a match point, Paolini eventually succumbed, with Andreeva winning 3-6,
6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals, where she will face World No. 1 Iga
Swiatek, with whom she has no previous encounters.
