Leylah
Fernandez reflected on her performance on tour as she prepares for the Miami
Open.
It hasn't
been the best start to the season for her. She is currently ranked 54th in the
live ranking, although in the coming weeks she will not be defending any
points, which could help her return to the top of the rankings if she achieves
good results.
The
Canadian was only able to win one match at the Australian Open and the same at
Indian Wells. She hasn't been able to win two consecutive matches in a main
draw since the first week of January at the ASB Classic. The runner-up of the
US Open 2021 has not achieved the expected consistency, although she has had
some good results, such as being the champion at the Monterrey Open 2022, or
reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open, where she fell to Martina
Trevisan after suffering an injury during the match.
"I
needed some time to reflect, but I'm proud of the improvements and to keep
growing. Life’s reality is not how many times you get knocked down but how many
times you stand back up. Next stop, Miami," Leylah tweeted.
Leylah Fernandez's last appearance was at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells, where she had a bye in the first round and defeated Emma Navarro in the second. In the third round, she faced
Caroline Garcia, who defeated her in 3 sets. As she prepares for Miami, she will debut against a player from the qualifying rounds and, if she wins, she will face Swiss player Belinda Bencic in the second round.
