Maria Sakkari pulled off a comeback win over
Petra Kvitova and her reaction after the match spoke volumes because comeback wins are pretty unheard of when it comes to her.
It's actually quite the opposite as she threw away several wins over the years, particularly in finals such as the one against Kontaveit where she was inches away from winning. It was a good moment for her because she's had a rough year in 2022 and wins like this certainly will get her back on the right track. She played well last year reaching the final here so there was quite a bit of pressure to do well again.
Speaking after the match, Sakkari said:
“For me, coming back against her, now that she’s playing good, now that she has beaten so many good players, it’s a bloody good win. It’s a good Kvitova again. I’m not saying that in a bad way. But last year for me, it was a lot easier [against her] than this year. She’s now in a good form. I just feel like the fact that I found a way today was one of the best comebacks of my life.”
Up next is Aryna Sabalenka which is a very tricky matchup considering how strong she is playing right now. Sakkari had some success against her though.
