The Czech player was greatly aided by Osaka who played well below expectations but that did not deter Vondrousova who applied a very smart game plan in the match. She was playing a lot of short balls forcing Osaka to come forward which she does not want to do. That kept her from finding her rhythm which proved key as Osaka committed too many errors.
Vondrousova said:
“I think this is one of the biggest [wins of my career], for sure. I beat Simona [Halep] twice, but I think Naomi, she is the greatest now, the greatest in the game, and she’s also the face of the Olympics. It was tough for her, I think, to play like this. But I’m too happy now.”
Asked if there was any pressure on her Vondrousova said:
“I wasn’t playing under pressure, but of course the second set was tight, so I was a bit under pressure then, those two match points and then deuce. I’m just very happy with my game today. The first set was amazing. I hope I’ll keep going."
