The 2023
US Open will be the swansong event for
Maryna Zanevska, who will be retiring following the final Grand Slam of the season at Flushing Meadows.
Zanevska, who was born in Ukraine but plays professionally for Belgium, reached a career-high singles ranking of World No.62, and won her only WTA singles title at the 2021 Poland Open.
Lingering back issues have led to Zanevska's retirement
In a statement issued on her Instagram account, Zanevska revealed she had been struggling with back pain over the past four years. The 29-year old stated she would be retiring after this year's US Open, and was looking forward to what the future holds.
"It’s time to say goodbye for tennis for now," wrote Zanevska. "I have been struggling with back pain for the last 4 years, and I got to the point where I can’t give to tennis what’s requiring to be competitive on the highest level of this extremely difficult, demanding sport. I have decide to play Us Open as my final tournament before stepping away from my career.
"And who knows what’s future holds for me. Will I ever make come back on tour or will have other challenges in life? I don’t know that, but what I know for sure is that I am happy and released with my decision and having so much exciting plans.
"I have made a podcast with @jeusetpodcast ,where I explained more in details why I took this decision, when, how emotional it was and how my team and family reacted to that. It will be in English and French. Looking forward to make my final dance on courts of @usopen, where my childhood’s dream was born."
