Ons Jabeur made light work of Yulia Starodubtsewa in her opener at the 2024 Australian Open and after Mirra Andreeva took down Bernarda Pera, a hotly anticipated match-up was set up as she will face the 16-year-old prodigy in the second round.
Andreeva has spoken highly of Jabeur before calling her one of her tennis idols, but Jabeur believes that will go out of the window when they face off and she will want to 'kick her ass'. But the sixth seed spoke highly of the WTA Newcomer of the Year who had one of the biggest ranking rises seen in some years in 2023 and is making a name for herself consistently.
Jabeur believes also that it is even more impressive given that she cannot play as many tournaments due to not turning 18 yet, something that Coco Gauff previously also had to go through during her breakout.
"I think she's been playing amazingly, she only has a couple of tournaments that she can play (due to eligibility rule) given her age and I feel like they should give her more tournaments to play," said Jabeur.
"It's going to be a very difficult match. I know she’s 16 years old, but she’s very tough. I might be her idol, but she wants to go there and kick my ass for sure. It's an honor to play her, I'm a big fan of her and love her attitude on the court so it's going to be an amazing match for both of us. I wanted to practice with her but every time it's difficult but here's the first practice until the next one."
