Paula Badosa defeated
Petra Kvitova in straight sets 7-5 7-6(4) to reach the 4th round of the 2022 edition of
Wimbledon.
This result is quite unexpected especially when you look at the way these two players prepared for Wimbledon. Kvitova actually opted to play on the grass leading up to Wimbledon with Badosa opting not to play any events but she also had some physical issues as well. Kvitova actually won a trophy leading up to Wimbledon and looked really good until this match.
Well, she looked quite good for a good portion of this match as well but the opponent was simply better. Kvitova jumped out to an early lead 2-0 and a chance to go up a double break but didn't ake it. She was able to keep her serve in the next few service games despite facing break points in pretty much every game. She was up 5-3 serving for the set at 5-4.
In that game Badosa finally found a breakthrough making it 5-5. She then took a 6-5 lead and got gifted the set with Kvitova committing a double fault on set point. The 2nd set was quite good from Kvitova as she did not face a single break point the entire set. She had nine of them in the 2nd set in total but did not use any of them.
In the tiebreak, it was Badosa who proved a tiny bit better and got the match. The crucial stat for Kvitova is 1 of 11 used break points which is not good, especially on grass. Had she taken the 2nd set she might have even won the match.
