Iga Swiatek was beaten by
Alize Cornet at
Wimbledon today 6-4 6-2 as the Polish player ends her incredible winning streak at 37 wins in a row.
This result is both shocking and not really. Many predicted that Swiatek would most likely lose the winning streak at Wimbledon but not many expected Alize Cornet to be the one that does it. She did and it was a rather easy win for Cornet result-wise but not that much in terms of what it took on the court. Swiatek was poor, really poor but it still took a very clinical approach from Cornet to get it done.
The French player stayed in rallies really well sending deep balls back to Iga who was unable to construct points the way she usually does. That forced her to try and finish off rallies from spots she usually does not do and as you can imagine we saw a lot of errors. The first set featured 17 of them by Swiatek who dropped it 6-4.
Cornet was the better player in that and she ended up winning the set deservedly. Swiatek opened the 2nd set much better taking an early 2-0 lead. She also had 40-15 on her own serve to take a 3-0 lead but threw it away with some poor choices again. She would not win a game anymore as her play completely fell apart against a soaring Cornet.
The match-winning streak ends at 37 and proves Swiatek is only human. It will be interesting to see when she makes her return after this and how she handles this loss.
