Jessica
Pegula spoke about her female role model and gender equality in professional
tennis.
The
American tennis player recently gave an interview during the Billie Jean King
Cup, which brings together female tennis teams from different countries in a
tie. Ranked World No. 3, Pegula mentioned her mother as her female role model,
saying: "I would say my female were lost probably my mom. I think she's
been more or less like the inspiration even though she wasn't an athlete. I
think just what she's done is woman Sports has been really special."
She also
expressed her opinion on the importance of gender equality in sports, saying,
"As we've become more equal, I would just
say in general like, you know having equal prize money at slams, playing
earlier an event this year where men and women United Cup played also equal
prize money on the same court. I would say just all of those things becoming
more equal in sports I think is really important," said the American.
"So in
general, I think just the growth of our sport over the course of the
last," added Pegula.
Pegula
played this weekend, securing two victories for her country against Austria. In
matches against the Austrian team, Pegula defeated Sinja Krauss on Friday with
a score of 6-0, 7-5, giving the USA the first point in the series. On Saturday,
she played against Austria's top-ranked singles player Julia Grabher and
achieved a convincing victory of 6-1, 6-3.
