Fans reacted to Jessica Pegula's comments about journalists after her defeat at the US Open.
The World No. 3 was one of the local hopes for the US Open trophy to return to American hands, something that hasn't happened since 2017 with Sloane Stephens.
However, Pegula suffered a resounding defeat in the fourth round against her compatriot Madison Keys with a convincing score of 6-1, 6-3. The recent champion of the Canadian Open once again failed to reach the later stages of a Grand Slam, as she has never gone beyond the quarterfinals.
Following this tough loss, some media outlets shared a photo of Pegula claiming that she was crying after her elimination. In response, the American tennis player addressed the press to clarify that she did not cry after the defeat:
"Were you guys the ones that tweeted that I cried when I walked off the court? Weren't you guys The Tennis Podcast? Someone said I walked off the court in tears. I most definitely was not crying. I'm pretty sure that was from you guys. I don't know if you tweeted it exactly. I definitely wasn't crying," Pegula said.
Several fans reacted to Pegula's words:
"Yes! Get them Jess! They're the fu**ing worst. Disrespectful and mean to every player except the brits. Horrible pod with horrible people on it," one fan tweeted.
“Players need to do this more! So all the "so called tennis journalists" can learn to behave,”
“Doubt Jess will be the number 1 ranked American for too much longer. If Mad or Coco win the tournament then one them will over take her.”
“@MattRobertsTTP sounded mortified. I can only imagine what he was feeling. 😳 💩probably hadn’t even seen the tweet than Hannah put out. Don’t think #jessicapegula will be throwing back any brews with you three in the near future unfortunately.
