Jelena Ostapenko was well beaten in the Quarter-Finals of the 2023 US Open by Coco Gauff who produced a 6-0, 6-2 win. But post match, the former Roland Garros champion was not left too pleased with the scheduling.
Ostapenko played late at night against Iga Swiatek and said she never recovered from it and that her playing earlier proved to be beneficial in the end with it being done to suit her according to the Latvian.
“I felt like I didn’t recover from that night. I got back to the hotel around 2 a.m. When you go to sleep at 5 or 6 a.m. you need a few days just to recover. If I play a late night session, in 1 day I have to play at the same time or later, because you don’t have much time to recover. I think the schedule was better for her because she played much earlier the day I played a night session," said Ostapenko.
Also she said that initially the planning was there for it to be a night session over a day session and that was she was surprised when it was confirmed as different. But it wasn't a good surprise for Ostapenko.
“When I asked the day before, I was pretty sure I’d play a night session because that’s what they told me. When the schedule came out, I saw I was playing 1st match. I was like ‘Wow. That’s a little bit strange scheduling.’ I was surprised. Not in a good way," she continued.
