Tennis fans believe some recent comments regarding Grand Slam success made by
Caroline Wozniacki were made in reference to fellow WTA stars
Emma Raducanu and
Bianca Andreescu.
The Danish star made her return to tennis this season after a three-year retirement, and made an impressive run to the fourth round of the 2023
US Open, before falling to American phenom Coco Gauff.
Wozniacki believes winning a Grand Slam doesn't guarantee success, fans read between the lines
Following her loss to Gauff, Wozniacki was asked about the hype around her opponent and the eagerness of fans to see the 19-year old win her maiden Grand Slam title. The former World No.1 responded by stating winning a Grand Slam title doesn't assure them of a successful career.
"I think just like in life, everyone goes through their journey in different ways and different timings," said Wozniacki. "Just because your first tournament win is a Grand Slam doesn't mean that you're going to have an absolutely all-star career later on, or just because you win quickly or you win late, it doesn't really define who you are.
"At the end of the day, everyone has their own path. Obviously Coco is doing well. She came on tour very young. There were a lot of eyes on her immediately. With that comes expectation, everything else."
Tennis fans had a mixed reaction to her comments, with some believing she was taking shots at Raducanu and Andreescu. Both players are renown for producing subpar results following their first Grand Slam title victories.
"Emma and Bianca catching strays," said a fan.
"Getting dragged by pushniacki omg raducanation really has reached a new low," said another fan.
"Why she ended Emma like this? We are down so bad," wrote another apparent Raducanu fan.
"Oh she ended Emma," said yet another fan.
