Caroline Wozniacki not playing again this year will seemingly give Tennis Australia a headache going into the new year for the Australian Open, with many players aiming to restart careers going into the 2024 season.
Wozniacki despite playing superbly in recent weeks and falling last night to Coco Gauff in the Last 16 of the US Open will not play Guadalajara or any upcoming tour events. She said in her Danish press conference that the Australian Open is now a big goal.
But the same can be said for two mothers in particular also aiming to do as she did before. Those being former two-time champion, Naomi Osaka who stated even before Wozniacki her intention to return soon after becoming a mother.
Former champion, Angelique Kerber also stated her intention earlier this year to return to the tour after becoming a mother.
Others in line would be the likes of Emma Raducanu, who despite protestations likely from some would be in the mix. As would Venus Williams if she decides to play going towards her 44th birthday.
There is the interesting return of Garbine Muguruza after she took a break from tour life earlier in the season. She also wants to return in 2024. As well as the dilemma around a certain Simona Halep who in theory could've served any ban put to her by that point given that she has been out a year and could still be found innocent.
Only six wildcards will be available. in theory though Kerber and Raducanu could use protected rankings in particular. But with home players such as Ajla Tomljanovic likely also vying for one, a big name or two could miss out.
