Caroline Wozniacki has confirmed that her 2023 season is over after being defeated at the
US Open, as she looks toward 2024 with the
Australian Open being a big goal.
The former world No. 1 was away from the sport for three and a half years after she initially retired in early 2020. She went on to have two children with her NBA star husband David Lee before announcing her return to professional tennis in June of this year.
She was then seen training before she made her comeback to the
WTA Tour at the Omnium Banque Nationale
Canadian Open in early August. She made it to the second round in Montreal where she was defeated by Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. Next, the Dane competed at the
Cincinnati Open where she lost her first-round match against Varvara Gracheva.
Wozniacki's surprise success at US Open
Following her early defeats on the North American swing, many fans predicted that it would take a little longer for Wozniacki to get back to form. However, she already started proving them wrong with a good run at this year's New York major.
The 33-year-old's biggest surprise came in the second round when she defeated longtime rival
Petra Kvitova. The two have been well-matched throughout their careers, but many thought that Kvitova's recent experience would see her through to the next round. Yet, Wozniacki moved past the eleventh seed in straight sets, 5-7, 6-7 (5).
She then went on to defeat 2020 Australian Open runner-up Jennifer Brady, who herself had just come back after a long time away, although her break was caused by injuries. Wozniacki's success then came to a halt in the Round of 16 where she came up against home favorite
Coco Gauff. Although she was able to take a set off the American, it was Gauff who ultimately got the win 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Wozniacki to return in 2024
In the post-match press conference following her defeat, Wozniacki confirmed to the Danish press that she would be ending her 2023 season but would be back in 2024. She also stated that the Australian Open, which she won back in 2018, would be a big goal for her. However, several fans pointed out on social media that she would need a wild card to enter the Slam if she did not play many matches beforehand.
She has also previously expressed her desire to compete in the 2024 Paris
Olympic Games, suggesting a potential mixed doubles partnership with her compatriot and world No. 4
Holger Rune.
