Czech Republic’s tennis star
Marketa Vondrousova has stated
that she was not expecting to reach another Grand Slam quarterfinal so soon after
registering her first major triumph earlier this year.
The 24-year-old was the surprise winner in Wimbledon just
two months back where she defeated the world number five Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur
in the final with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
Vondrousova started the ongoing
US Open 2023 as an underdog but now she already booked her place in the last-eight.
She defeated America’s Peyton Stearns in the round of 16 tie on Sunday with a score of 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Talking after the match, Vondrousova stated that she was very
pleased with her performance but also revealed that she was not expecting to go
this far in another Grand Slam so soon after winning Wimbledon earlier this
year.
“I’m very happy,” she said. “I actually didn’t expect it.
After Wimbledon, it was a lot of pressure. I’m feeling good. I’m just trying to
enjoy the game. I feel like every match is very tough. We’ll see what happens
next.”
The victory against Stearns also helped her register her
best record at the US Open. Previously, her best outing was playing in the fourth
round back in 2018.
Vondrousova will now face America’s Madison Keys in the quarterfinal
of the mega-event on Wednesday.
