Alexander Zverev has added another notch on his comeback trail with the German ace finding his way into the Quarter-Finals of the 2023 US Open.
This after an absolute epic win over Jannik Sinner going into early morning on Tuesday. He kept his cool in the brutal heat seal it 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and will now face Carlos Alcaraz in a mouth watering proposition.
He was pushed all the way by Sinner, who struggled physically in the second and third sets with his time on court seemingly numbered. But the Italian wasn't about to let it go without a fight.
After cramping to the point that Zverev actually checked on his well being, he improved sufficiently and gave the crowd their money's worth. Albeit after Zverev was abused by one fan with 'the most Hitler phrase in history'.
But it was Zverev who had the last laugh as he outlasted Sinner with 14 more winners to seven in the final set to claim it after nearly five hours.
After sharing sets and the aforementioned cramp, Sinner's revival came with the only break of serve of the fourth set as Zverev double faulted on break point. But the momentum was unable to continue as Zverev broke at the opportune time and saving the only break point he faced on serve throughout the set.
“I guess I can say I’m back, right? This is what I live for, this is what I absolutely love to do,” said Zverev. “I wish I could have played a little bit shorter, that’s for sure, but last year when I wasn’t able to play, these were exactly the moments I missed. Until 1:30 a.m. in front of a packed crowd on Arthur Ashe Stadium. There’s nothing better.”
“To be honest this is one of the best moments of my career, I think. After my comeback, after everything, so I’m looking forward to what’s next.”
