Former world number one
Jimmy Connors has highlighted the
problems faced by Tunisia’s
Ons Jabeur in the final of the Grand Slams.
The 28-year-old recently suffered defeat in the final of the
Wimbledon 2023 despite starting as the favourite against Czech Republic’s Marketa
Vondrousova in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
The defeat was her second consecutive in Wimbledon as
she also lost to Elena Rybakina last year with a score of 3–6, 6–2, 6–2.
During those two heartbreaking defeats, the current world
number six also suffered another major loss which was in the US Open last year where
she was the second-best against current world number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek
with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
Connors, who won eight Grand Slam titles in his illustrious
career, was quoted in a report where he highlighted a flaw of Jabeur which according
to him is causing an issue in big matches, such as the final of major events.
"You know, I think she's been in three finals and out
of the last five or six Grand Slams if I'm not mistaken,” said the 70-year-old.
“And you know, playing some good tennis but she stalls. Yeah, it seems that she
stalls when she gets to the final.
“I guess it was what, two or three years ago where, you
know, I'm not gonna say you jumped on the Ons Jabeur bandwagon but you picked
her for you know, for a while to really start breaking through and making a
name for herself.”
