Karolina Pliskova announced that she underwent ankle surgery following an injury at the
US Open. The former World No. 1 retired during her second-round match against
Jasmine Paolini after only three points were played.
The Italian was serving in the first game, and the score was 15-15 when Pliskova took a wrong step, twisting her ankle while trying to change direction. She quickly requested medical assistance and hobbled off the court.
Ankle surgery completed after US Open exit
The 32-year-old player indicated after a few minutes that she was unable to continue and exited directly to the locker rooms from Louis Armstrong Stadium. This Wednesday, Pliskova provided updates on her health status, posting on Instagram that she had undergone surgery to repair the tendons in her left ankle.
Pliskova shared a photo from a hospital bed with a protective boot on her left foot: "Happy to share that I successfully underwent surgery on the tendons in my left ankle," she wrote. "I’ll do everything I can to get back on the tennis courts as soon as possible, but health always comes first. A huge thank you to the medical team for their excellent care and to all of you for your support."
The Czech player received comments from several of her colleagues, including her sister Kristyna Pliskova, Karolina Muchova, Camila Osorio, Harriet Dart, Shelby Rogers, among others.
After Pliskova’s exit from Flushing Meadows, Paolini sent her best wishes to her opponent and regretted the abrupt end of the match: "It's so sad," Paolini said. "I hope she recovers really soon because it's bad to leave the court like this. I don't know what to say because we didn't play a match. It's not good for tennis."
