The 2023 WTA Elite Trophy will take place from Tuesday, October 24 - 29 at the Hengqin International Tennis Center in Zhuhai, China. Here is our preview of the tournament, featuring the Top 12 players who did not qualify for the WTA Finals
The top seed at the prestigious tournament will be World No. 10 Barbora Krejcikova. Maria Sakkari would have been the biggest name at the tournament but following her withdrawal this honor went to the Czech player.
Krejcikova recently made the final of the Zhengzhou Open, making up for a first-round defeat at the China Open in early October. She also won the San Diego Open after she defeated Sofia Kenin in the final last month. She will face eleventh seed Magda Linette and sixth seed Daria Kasatkina in the group stage.
Meanwhile, second seed Madison Keys had a hugely successful run to the US Open semi-finals and made it to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon earlier this year. The American player has only competed once since Flushing Meadows, suffering an early exit to Emma Navarro at the Guadalajara Open in September.

Garcia, Zheng, and Ostapenko also among the line-up

Keys will face World No. 19 Beatriz Haddad Maia and 2022 WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia in the group stage. The Brazilian player had a run to the semi-finals of the French Open earlier this season but has had mixed results since.
She and fifth seed Veronika Kudermetova will also compete as the top seeds in the doubles event. The latter player is in a group with fourth seed Liudmila Samsonova and wildcard home player Zhu Lin in the tournament's singles draw.
Meanwhile, Garcia has had a difficult season compared to last year and has thus failed to qualify for the WTA Finals in Cancun. However, in lieu of defending her title, she will be aiming for the next best thing with a victory in Zhuhai to try and redeem a tough year. This may be tricky, as she has never faced Haddad Maia before and Garcia currently trails 1-4 in her head-to-head with Keys.
Home player Qinwen Zheng will also be there as the seventh seed after she made it to the quarter-finals of the US Open and soared to victory at the recent Zhengzhou Open, where she defeated top seed Krejcikova in the final. She will face tenth seed Donna Vekic and third seed Jelena Ostapenko in her group stage in Zhuhai.
