Mirra Andreeva is set to face Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16 at the Prudential Hong Kong Open. Here is our preview of the match, where the two young talents will aim for a spot in the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 tournament.
Teen talent Andreeva has had a breakthrough season this year. After finishing as the runner-up in juniors at the Australian Open, the 16-year-old made her senior Grand Slam debut at the Roland Garros, where she reached the third round.
She then went on to make a name for herself at Wimbledon after she defeated tenth seed Barbora Krejcikova and twenty-second seed Anastasia Potapova to make the Round of 16. Last week, the Russian reached the Round of 16 at the WTA 1000 China Open, where she was able to take fifth seed Elena Rybakina to three sets.
In her opening match at Victoria Park in Hong Kong, Andreeva defeated Dayana Yastremska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Fernandez looking for a deep run after difficult season

Meanwhile, Fernandez will be aiming for a deep run at this tournament after a difficult season in which the 2021 US Open runner-up failed to make it past the second round of a Grand Slam.
However, the 21-year-old did make it to the quarter-final of the WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open Akron last month, suggesting that she is perhaps returning to form.
So far in Hong Kong, she progressed through the opening round despite a difficult first set against top seed Victoria Azarenka. Fernandez was able to claim back the second set after the Belarusian became troubled by an injury before Azarenka subsequently retired from the match.
She is currently trailing 0-1 in her head-to-head with Andreeva after the latter defeated her in straight sets at the Madrid Open earlier this year.
The two players have quite different styles of play, with Fernandez preferring to take the ball early and play aggressively throughout. In particular, she will be hoping to use her powerful serve to her advantage.
On the other hand, Andreeva will be aiming to use her speed across the court in order to outdo her opponent. Her heavy strike should also be a benefit to her in this match.
Overall, while Fernandez may play with more aggression, Andreeva has been more consistent throughout this season and her quick-footedness could frustrate her opponent into committing a few too many unforced errors, which is a problem that Fernandez has had in the past.
Prediction: Mirra Andreeva to win in three sets.
