Jelena Ostapenko and Amanda Anisimova will face off in the Qatar Open final, both aiming for their first WTA 1000 title.
The 27-year-old Latvian overcame a tough semifinal against three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory, extending her flawless run this week without dropping a set. On the other hand, Anisimova defeated an inspired Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-3—Alexandrova had previously eliminated Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula.
The 2017 French Open champion has left behind months of inconsistency to reach her third WTA 1000 final. ‘Penko’ previously fell short in Doha in 2016 against Carla Suárez Navarro and in the 2018 Miami Open final against Sloane Stephens.
Ostapenko delivered dominant wins along the way, defeating Jasmine Paolini (No. 4), Ons Jabeur (No. 41), and Iga Swiatek (No. 2), without conceding more than four games in any match. The Latvian has looked particularly inspired in Doha, and her victory over Swiatek solidifies her credentials to claim the title.
Anisimova continues to prove she is ready to take her career to the next level, reaching her second WTA 1000 final just six months after finishing runner-up at the Canadian Open against Jessica Pegula.
Her semifinal win against Alexandrova marked her fifth consecutive victory over a top-30 player this week, including world No. 9 Paula Badosa and former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez. As of now, she has climbed to No. 25 in the live rankings.
Both players are among the biggest hitters on the Tour, though Ostapenko plays with a more aggressive, high-risk style. The Latvian has been on fire this week, finishing her match against Swiatek with an impressive ratio of 24 winners to 15 unforced errors—numbers she will need to replicate to succeed with her all-or-nothing approach.
