The China Open will take place between September 25 - October 6, 2024 with the WTA 1000 missing some key names including the defending champion. But over $1m is on offer for the winner with Prize Money set.
Last year Iga Swiatek was the victor. She took home 16.92% more though compared to this year. But like other tournaments, it has been done to help players in earlier rounds.
Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula return for the first time since the US Open and they will lead the field in Beijing. Players who make the last sixteen for instance can look to 9.18% more prize money with $101,000 on offer.
Also in the second and third round, there have been increases of 6.73% and 13.65%`. $34,500 and $59,100 are on offer for those rounds. But this means that the runner-up also has taken a huge bump. They will receive 25% less. This amounts to $585,000 with semi-finalists claiming nearly 20% less with $325,000.
Swiatek like alluded to is defending champion. But she will not play for personal reasons. Elena Rybakina is also another major casualty with constant injury issues for the Kazakh. But this means that Jasmine Paolini, Coco Gauff, Qinwen Zheng, Emma Navarro, Barbora Krejcikova and Jelena Ostapenko lead the seeds.
Danielle Collins and Maria Sakkari's continued injury woes have seen them both withdraw though in a blow in particular for the American's WTA Finals chances. The final WTA 1000 of the season, it offers a final chance realistically to make a surge towards the WTA Finals.
Tournaments will continue in the Asian hard court swing, but unlike the ATP there is a finite number of events left to achieve what is wanted. So a big week awaits.
