Russian tennis player
Vera Zvonareva has been blocked from entering
Poland to take part in the Warsaw Open.
According to a report by Reuters, the Polish interior
ministry stated that the 38-year-old was barred from entering the country
keeping in view the state and public safety.
"The Border Guard prevented a Russian tennis player
from entering Poland. Vera Zvonareva, using a visa issued by France, tried to
get into our country on a flight from Belgrade to Warsaw," said the ministry
said in a statement.
"After arriving from Serbia, the tennis player stayed
in the transit zone of Warsaw Chopin Airport and today after 1200 she flew to
Podgorica."
Tensions have been at an all-time high between Russia and its
neighbouring countries after the invasion of Ukraine last year.
Since then, there has been reported loss of lives on both
sides in the armed conflict, now entering its 17th month.
Zvonareva is a famous tennis player, having reached the final
of two Grand Slams in 2010 but on both occasions, she ended up on the losing
side, first against America’s Serena Williams in Wimbledon with a score of 6-3,
6-2 and then against Belgium’s Kim Clijsters in the US Open with a score of 6-2,
6-1.
The Moscow-born became the world number two in 2010 after
her heroics on the field. She also won a bronze medal for Russia in the 2008 Olympics.
