Victoria Azarenka defeated Angelique Kerber 6-3 7-5 at the bett1 OPEN in Berlin and she happy with her performance especially after a dicey 2nd set.
Victoria Azarenka put forward a strong performance against Angelique Kerber to defeat her on home turf at the bett1 Open in Berlin. The Belarussian played a great first set winning it 6-3 before unnecessarily complicating things in the 2nd set. She found herself down 3-1 and 5-3 before going a 4-0 run to close out the set 7-5.
Despite making things tough on herself in the 2nd set Azarenka enjoyed the battle as she said:
"I always really enjoy our battles. I always know that it's going to be a battle, no matter what and I prepare myself for that - there is a certain preparation and motivation going into matches like that."
The duo played several times on the tour and each time the match was a great one with both players digging deep. Asked about the struggles in the 2nd set and what ultimately made her come back she said:
"[In the second set] I feel like I was coming back to what was working for me - some of the points I was falling off and not playing aggressive. Once I knew that I was stepping up a bit more consistently."
