Serena Williams overcame a slow start to rally from behind and win against Tsvetana Pironkova reaching the US Open semifinal.
Tsvetana Pironkova is having a magical run at the
US Open but the toughest opponent yet is Serena Williams. The start of the match was very good for Pironkova who didn't look intimated at all playing very good tennis at the start. She would get a significant boost when she broke Serena midway through the 1st set. She would go on to play very good tennis until the end eventually winning the 1st set 6-4. She was especially good on her own 1st serve and Serena second serve taking every chance she got.
She started off the 2nd set with another break and many wondered whether her magical run could continue. Serena wasn't going to give up easily and she immediately broke Pironkova back to make it 1-1. The players would go on to trade several games before Serena decided she had enough and stepped up her game. She broke Pironkova at the perfect time taking a 5-3 lead and closing out the 2nd set with a 6-3 2nd set victory.
The 3rd set started off great for Serena Williams who broke Pironkova immediately in the first game. It was a very tough and long game that saw many deuces before being won by Serena. From there on we saw a Serena that was focused exclusively on her own service games prioritizing preserving the game rather than rushing to finish off the match. At 4-2 Serena played a more aggressive game hoping to end it quickly.
She got a breakpoint and she took selling the fate of Pironkova. It was 5-2 with Serena serving for the match and she did just that ending a magical run for Pironkova. Marvellous play from both player's but ultimately Serena proved better.
