Medvedev returns to US Open semifinal with win over Rublev

Daniil Medvedev is one match away from making the US Open final for the second consecutive year, following his quarterfinal win over Andrey Rublev on Wednesday.

The World No.5 faced Rublev in an all-Russian affair on Arthur Ashe stadium, with Medvedev prevailing in a 7-6(6) 6-3 7-6(5) victory. Medvedev now holds a 4-0 career lead over Rublev, having never dropped a set to his countryman.

The first set saw no breaks of serve as each man relied on their thunderous serves, Medvedev had 16 aces in the match whereas Rublev finished with 10. A tiebreak ensued with Rublev accruing a 5-1 and 6-3 lead, but he was unable to close out the set. Medvedev's grit and consistency prevailed, as the third seed rallied to claim the first set.

The sole break of the match occurred in the second set, with Medvedev relying on deep groundstrokes to force short returns, which he put away with ease. After acquiring a 4-2 lead, the lanky Russian held his nerve and served out the second set.

Rublev attempted a comeback, attacking his opponent's backhand but could not power past his compatriot. With no breaks of serve, another tiebreak ensued. This time Medvedev applied more pressure to the Rublev serve, and converted his first match point with a forehand winner.

The 2019 runner-up is yet to drop a set the entire tournament, and is aiming to become the first man in the Open Era to win the US Open without dropping a set. He will face the winner between second seed Dominic Thiem and Australian speedster Alex De Minaur.
