Former doubles world number one Pam Shriver has expressed
admiration for the relationship between former world number one America’s Chris
Evert and Czech Republic’s legendary tennis player Martina Navratilova.
The two were involved in one of the fiercest rivalries in the
history of women’s singles tennis in the Open era.
Evert and Navratilova each other a staggering 80 times in
their illustrious careers where the latter had a slight edge having won 43 of those
encounters.
Sixty of those meetings came in the final of a competition
where once again, Navratilova had an edge with 36 victories.
Not only Evert and Navratilova shared a lot of success in
the field, but the two also had similar difficulties in their personal lives as
both were diagnosed with cancer.
Talking about the two, Shriver, who won 21 doubles Grand
Slam titles in her career, expressed love for the relationship between the two
great players.
“Can I just say, those two, what they've been through
medically in the last year. Their story continues, the greatest rivalry in
sports continues with this amazing friendship and shared difficult
relationships,” she said. “I have so much admiration for them both,” Shriver
expressed.”
Evert finished her career with 18 Grand Slam titles, an incredible
feat to say the least. Her most success came in the French Open where she
lifted seven titles.
On the other hand, Navratilova also ended up winning 18
Grand Slam titles in her career. Her best outing was in Wimbledon where she
ended up lifting the title nine times.
