Reports have broken from Romanian publication Fanatik on Easter Sunday of Simona Halep's next destination after her return to action at the Miami Open after her doping ban was cut from four years to nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Halep will reportedly play Rouen Open which starts on April 15 with the indoor French tournament having a quality field for a WTA 250 with Naomi Osaka, Mirra Andreeva and Caroline Garcia all playing despite Stuttgart taking place on the same week.
With Halep priorly playing in Stuttgart, it was potentially mooted that she would gain a wildcard but this is a difficult task given that such players as Emma Raducanu and Angelique Kerber hold endorsements with the brand so will be ahead in the queue. Also it is a super strong field featuring Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff among others so it makes more sense perhaps.
But also makes a mockery of her reasoning for withdrawing from the Billie Jean King Cup which put her Olympic Games hopes in jeopardy. She withdrew from the Billie Jean King Cup tie in the days prior due to medical reasons, but will seemingly return to action the week after anyway in Rouen.
But it also ticks off a key benchmark for playing in the Olympic Games with Halep needing to be in the top 400 to be considered and she would head towards the top 300 potentially after this tournament. It has yet to be confirmed by the tournament, but will likely add even more star power to a hectic week which acts as a double header in lieu of no Monte-Carlo Masters for WTA stars.
