Garbine Muguruza was not happy with the behaviour of
Barbora Krejcikova during their
US Open match and she let her know that at the handshake and after the match.
Barbora Krejcikova was cruising in her match against Garbine Muguruza essentially crushing the Spaniard with ease. However midway through the 2nd set, she started to have issues with her physique. Her play deteriorated and she lost a 4-0 lead eventually forcing a tiebreak. In it, she would prevail but Muguruza took exception to very long breaks by Krejcikova between points.
The Czech player did apologise after the match and during the match however, Muguruza was dismissive of it clearly annoyed by the defeat. Microphones picked up her simply saying 'so unprofessional' while shaking hands. After the match she continued saying:
“Listen, I don't really want to talk about this. It's…I'll let you guys judge what you think about this. Well, I think, between players, you know a little bit how to behave in certain moments and, yeah, I wasn't very happy at the end of the match.”
Muguruza might have a point but Krejcikova was clearly feeling unwell being helped off the court. She did not give a post-match interview neither did she give a post-match press conference. WTA released a short quote from Krejcikova where she explained she was feeling very dizzy and unable to breathe.
No cause was given for the incident but people speculated it might have been a panic attack. It remains to be seen whether Krejcikova will continue at the US Open.
