After losing to eventual champion Veronika Kudermetova in a surprise Quarter-Final exit in Tokyo,
Iga Swiatek is back in business in the final WTA 1000 of the season at the
China Open.
Swiatek saw off Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-4, 6-3 in a match which as the scoreline suggests wasn't the now World No.2 firing on all cylinders. But one that was certainly entertaining for going back and forth.
In particular the second set was a 'break festival' as there were eight breaks in nine games played with a mere hold of serve proving vital as Sorribes Tormo could not hold at all throughout the second and deciding set in the end.
She produced 27 winners but 25 unforced errors in the contest converting half of her break points with 7/14. This showed that on any other given day due to the unforced error count in particular that Swiatek could have been at her dominant best.
But after saying pre tournament that she felt rusty, she will get to knock that court rust off as she will be back in action tomorrow against Varvara Gracheva. A potential tie with Magda Linette also looms in the third round.
Caroline Garcia who needs to win Beijing for a second time to have a chance to be at the WTA Finals started her quest. She saw off Kateryna Baindl with a 6-2, 6-4 win. The Frenchwoman has shown some good form as of late and is up and running.
Jessica Pegula could face Jelena Ostapenko too in the Last 16. The latter is already through after a walk-over from Linda Noskova. The American will face Anna Blinkova for a spot in the Last 16.
