Reigning French Open champion Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic made winning starts at the 2021 Madrid Open.
The 19-year old Swiatek looked exactly the way she looked at the 2020 French Open when she demolished everyone en route to the trophy. Playing against Riske can be a tricky affair but the Polish player had no issues asserting herself as the dominant player early on.
After that, it was easy-going as she cruised t a 6-1 opening set win. Already in great rhythm, Swiatek continued playing well in the 2nd set winning it with 6-1 as well. A swift 68-minute match for Swiatek who moves on at the Madrid Open to R2 where she will play Siegemund.
Joining her in the 2nd round will be Belinda Bencic who took down Kristina Mladenovic in a fabulous R1 matchup at the Madrid Open. Mladenovic, known as a strong clay player, played a solid match but Bencic was able to get the better of her. The first set was played well by both players but Bencic served better overall and was able to emerge with a 6-4 win.
The 2nd set featured an even better play by Bencic who was able to hold her serve without any issues while creating enough chances on Mladenovic's serve. In the end, it was enough for a 6-2 2nd set victory for Bencic who moves on at the Madrid Open. She will play Bernarda Pera in R2.
