Iga Swiatek keeps creating history at
Roland Garros but this time she did in the doubles event where she is participating with Mattek-Sands.
Iga Swiatek and
Bethanie Mattek-Sands are through to the next round of the WTA Doubles Rolland Garros event after taking down number one seeds Hsieh & Mertens 5-7 6-4 7-5. It was a sensational doubles match in which there was somewhat of an upset. Mertens and Hsieh were the number one seeds and by many favoured to win it all.
Unluckily for them, they faced off against Swiatek and Mattek-Sands with the Polish player continuing to make history in Paris. They played well in the first set but trailed for the better part of it. They got a huge momentum shift when they broke their opponents at 5-4 when Hsieh and Mertens served for the set. It did not matter as they lost the next game to lose the first set.
They played a much better 2nd set serving better and just played more solid tennis. Swiatek was very focused and held her own against the number one seeds. They broke their opponents twice and lost their serve once for the 6-4 finish. It all fell apart early in the 3rd set as they got outplayed by their opponents. They were down 1-5 but then went on a 6-0 run to win the set and match 7-5.
It was an unbelievable comeback as such comebacks are extremely rare in doubles tennis. Winning 6 games in a row in a doubles match is very impressive especially against the number one seeds but Swiatek and Mattek-Sands did it. It took them over three hours but it was worth it as they celebrated their win enthusiastically.
