A win’s a win ✅ No.1 @iga_swiatek passes a tricky 6-3, 7-5 test from Kovinic to wrap up her 31st consecutive victory and punch a ticket to the final 16 #RolandGarros
World No.1 Iga Swiatek is into the Last 16 at the French Open and has sealed her 31st consecutive win after surviving her trickiest test yet against Danka Kovinic at Roland Garros.
Kovinic despite dropping the first set started the game by stopping Swiatek's usual dominance as it took the former champion longer than some matches so far to seal it 6-3.
But despite not being at her best, Swiatek broke Kovinic's set to go a set and a break up. Going 4-1 up though, she was taken to break point by the Montenegrin who found a way into the tie and went onto make it 5-4 from there looking to claim a set back.
But as she does often at the moment, Swiatek wrestled the game back in her favour and seemed to recover and served out tto level.
A drop shot from Kovinic caught Swiatek out and made her work but at 30-30, Swiatek sealed a winner and seized the break to go 6-5 up before claiming the win on the second match point.
Next up will be the Chinese prodigy, Qinwen Zheng or Alize Cornet. While Irina-Camelia Begu is also through and will face Jessica Pegula or Tamara Zidansek next up.
This after the run of French unknown, Leolia Jeanjean came to an end in a 6-1, 6-4 as Begu battled the partisan crowd and a comeback as the wildcard came from 1-5 down in the second to save three match points and offered some resistance before Begu sealed it.
