The first major seed is out with
Angelique Kerber losing easily to Jil Belen Teichmann from Switzerland 2- 6 3-6.
Both Angelique Kerber and
Jil Teichmann played their first matches since the US Open and despite arriving in Ostrava with a better result from the US Open, Kerber got smashed today. Teichmann is admittedly a player that usually better performs indoors than Kerber yet the ease with which she defeated Kerber was stunning.
The Swiss player caught Kreber off guard with her ball-striking ability which is something she showed in Cincinnati when she reached the final ultimately losing to Ashleigh Barty. The key thing for Teichmann was that she won all the key rallies especially in a match where she did not serve well at all. She hit was below 50 % of her first serves but was still able to fend off every attack from Kerber.
She converted all three break points in the first set while also saving 4 out of 5 she faced and that was enough for a 6-2 opening set win. Kerber raised her level in the 2nd set but it still didn't matter as Teichmann still controlled the match. Kerber was simply too vulnerable on her own serve and Teichmann repeatedly punished it.
She took an early lead and from there it was a straightforward cruise towards the finish line with the match ending with 6-2 6-3 to Teichmann who moves on after a brillaint win over 6th seed Angelique Kerber. A truly stunning display from Teichmann proving her Cincinnati run was no coincidence.
