Understanding the struggles of Emma Raducanu: insight from Mark Petchey

Former Britain player Mark Petchey has highlighted one
reason why Emma Raducanu has struggled in the recent past. The 21-year-old was
once regarded as the next big thing when she won the US Open at the age of 18
in 2021.
The most impressive aspect of that triumph was the fact that
Raducanu started the campaign through a qualifying round but even then managed
to go all the way and beat Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final in straight
sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3 to lift the title.
However, since then, not much has gone right for the former world
number 10. Ever since lifting the US Open, the Toronto-born star has not
managed to play in the quarterfinal or beyond in any of the major event. Her most
recent appearance in a major competition was at the US Open where she was knocked
out after losing in the first round to America’s Sofia Kenin with a score of
6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Former Britian’s player Patchey recently spoke to Bally Casino, as quoted by Tennis 365, where he highlighted reasons behind Raducanu’s recent struggles. The 54-year-old is of the opinion that being stubborn
about certain things is making the former world number 10 struggle in different
areas.

“She’s stubborn in
certain areas which is a great quality in tennis, you need that," he said. "You need to
have a certain self-reliance; you need to be able to put things to one side and
entertain thoughts that you don’t necessarily always need to implement into your
game, but you must consider things. I’m sure she now wishes that some things
had been different. From Emma’s perspective right now, there’s no point looking
back over the last couple of years overthinking, it’s all wasted energy.
Hopefully, the bumpy ride has shown her a roadmap or a signpost of where she
wants to go from here to progress as a player.”
