Williams had lost against Stephens in their previous encounter at the 2013 Australian Open, ending her 20-match winning streak in the process. The then-World No.1 had defeated Stephens two weeks earlier in Brisbane, and was a heavy favorite to lift the title in Melbourne. However, she fell to her younger opponent in a match that saw Williams receive treatment for back spasms.
The two finally clashed again at Flushing Meadows, and each was eager to obtain the lead in this year-long rivalry. In a mostly one-sided display, Williams proved why was was the best player in the World. The Grand Slam champion hit 22 winners, dominating Stephens 6-4 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Williams would go on to win the event, claiming her 5th US Open title and 17th singles Grand Slam trophy.
