Welcome to Winner’s Circle, a segment where we review each winner of every ATP and WTA tournament during the truncated 2020 season.

In this edition, Ukrainian No.1 Elina Svitolina clinches her first title of the 2020 season at the Abierto GNP Seguros. This would be Svitolina's first title since winning the season-ending 2018 WTA Finals in Shenzhen.

Abierto GNP Seguros Winner: Elina Svitolina

With her opening round loss in Doha behind her, Svitolina began her Monterrey campaign as the top seed. She defeated unseeded Danka Kovinic 6-3 6-2 in the first round, advancing in just one hour. The Ukrainian then faced Belarusian Olga Govortsova, dispatching of her opponent in a 6-3 6-4 victory.
In a highly-anticipated quarterfinal, Svitolina faced Acapulco runner-up Layla Fernandez. However, the Canadian teenager was unable to keep up with Svitolina's power and technique. The top seed prevailed 6-4 7-5 in an hour and 38 minutes, advancing to her first semifinal of the season.
Awaiting Svitolina in the semifinal was unseeded Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus, who held a 1-0 career lead over the top seed. Rus had notched a comprehensive 6-1 6-1 victory sixth seed Rebecca Peterson in the quarterfinals, leading to her showdown with Svitolina. However, she was thoroughly outplayed, as the Ukrainian cruised through 6-0 6-1 in just 50 minutes.
Entering the final feeling refreshed, Svitolina faced one last hurdle in the form of Czech Marie Bouzkova. The ninth seed defeated the Ukrainian in their sole encounter at Guangzhou the previous year. With vengeance on her mind, Svitolina grabbed the first set after the pair exchanged breaks. It was a struggle onwards, as Bouzkova fought back to level the match at one set a piece. However, Svitolina's experience was too much for the first-time WTA singles finalist. The Ukrainian outlasted her younger opponent, winning 7-5 4-6 6-4 in three hours.
Winning the Monterrey title would break Svitolina's title drought of over a year, with her last final appearance occurring at the 2019 WTA Finals in Shenzhen (l. to Barty). Furthermore, she would rise two spots to World No.5 in the WTA rankings.
