Rising American star
Alycia Parks ousted former World No.1
Victoria Azarenka in their opening round clash at the 2023
Madrid Open, and appeared elated after ending a six-match losing streak.
Parks displayed her potential in the 6-2 7-6(5) victory over the two-time Grand Slam champion, outplaying Azarenka in the opening set before struggling to close it out.
"I think I came out & played my game, tried to be confident & stay with what I know," said the 22-year old. "My dad’s here to coach me. That’s what helped me get through the match. It’s my 1st time in Madrid, the fans are great. You guys helped me get through the match.”
Despite her recent poor play in singles, Parks has had relative success in doubles, reaching at least the quarterfinals in three of her last five events.
