Brazil’s
Nauhany Vitoria Leme Da Silva created history on
Monday as she became the first player to have been born in 2010 and win in the
main round of the WTA competition. The 15-year-old featured in the first round
of the WTA 250 event, SP Open, in São Paulo, and defeated fellow countrywoman
Carolina Alves in a three-set contest with a score of 6-7, 6-2, 6-0.
The match lasted nearly
1 hour and 50 minutes, where Da
Silva managed to get the better of the player who was nearly double her age. The most impressive aspect of Da Silva’s win was the fact that she managed to recover despite losing the first set, which was on a tiebreak. In the contest,
Da Silva converted six break points, which were five more than Alves. She also produced
six aces, which were five more than Alves.
Da Silva, recently in an interview, stated that she grew up while playing at the Villa-Lobos State Park in the city's Alto de Pinheiros district. Da Silva is currently ranked 1,206 and was handed a
wildcard entry into the main round of the competition. With that win, Da Silva
is guaranteed to be placed in the top 1,000 women’s players in the world.
Currently, Da Silva is ranked 37th in the third round.
Big win
Da Silva’s next round opponent will be the second-seeded Argentina Solana Sierra. The 21-year-old cemented her spot in the last-16
after beating Arianne Hartono in the round of 32 with a score of 7-6, 6-3.
Interestingly,
Da Silva is not only featuring in the doubles category in the ongoing
competition. Da Silva is also featuring in the doubles event, where she is partnering her fellow countrywoman, Victoria Luiza Barros. The two will face
the pair of America’s Anna Sinclair Rogers and Indonesia’s Janice Tjen in the first
round contest on Tuesday.
