Former world number one
Victoria Azarenka has achieved yet
another milestone in her professional career. The 34-year-old is currently
taking part in the ongoing
Madrid Open where she registered her place in the
round of 32 after beating Germany’s Tatjana Maria in straight sets with a score
of 6-3, 6-1.
With that win, Azarenka became the first player in the
history of women’s tennis to secure 200 wins in WTA 1000 events ever since they
started back in 2009. Her closest rival on the list is the former world number
one Simona Halep with 186 wins in WTA 1000 events. The Minsk-born will be
hoping to continue her winning run in the competition after registering a
record-setting win when she will face Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in the third
round on Saturday.
Azarenka is going through a decent season where she has put in some good performances but at the same time had some very ordinary outings as
well. Her best outing came while playing at the Brisbane International and the Miami
Open. In Brisbane, the two-time Grand Slam winner lost in the semifinal to the current
world number two Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-2, 6-4. In Miami, Azarenka
lost in the semifinal to Elena Rybakina with a score of 6-4, 0-6, 7-6.
