Victoria Mboko has been awarded the first main-draw wild card for the 2026 Internationaux de Strasbourg, tournament officials confirmed on Monday. The announcement comes just days after the Canadian teenager withdrew from the Rome Open because of a gastrointestinal illness. Mboko will use the WTA 500 event as part of her final preparation ahead of Roland Garros, adding another notable name to one of the strongest pre-Paris fields on the calendar.
The Strasbourg tournament is expected to feature as many as 11 top-30 players, reinforcing its growing importance during the final week before the French Open. Among the confirmed names are Madison Keys, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Leylah Fernandez, Iva Jovic and Liudmila Samsonova.
Mboko arrives in Strasbourg after a disrupted clay swing. The world No. 9 has played only one clay-court match this season, competing in Madrid before withdrawing from the Rome Open because of a gastrointestinal illness. She had received a first-round bye in Rome as the tournament’s No. 10 seed but pulled out before her opening match.
Despite the interrupted schedule on clay, Mboko remains one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour this season. The Canadian reached the finals in Adelaide and Doha earlier this year and captured the WTA 1000 title in Montreal last season, results that helped establish her inside the top 10 at just 19 years old.

Strasbourg offers Mboko valuable match preparation

For Mboko, the Strasbourg wild card represents an important opportunity to gain competitive matches before Roland Garros. Compared to many of the top players in the field, she arrives with limited time on clay, making match rhythm and physical continuity key priorities during the final week before Paris.
Her withdrawal from Rome interrupted what was expected to be a crucial stage of her preparation. Tournament officials confirmed that Mboko withdrew because of illness only hours before her scheduled second-round match against Tyra Grant. She was replaced in the draw by lucky loser Nikola Bartunkova.
Even with the setback, Mboko’s broader 2026 campaign has remained highly productive. Her performances in Adelaide and Doha showed continued consistency at WTA 1000 level, while her title run in Montreal last season confirmed her ability to compete deep into major events against elite opposition.

Strong field expected in final week before Roland Garros

The Internationaux de Strasbourg continues to strengthen its position as one of the most competitive tournaments in the week immediately preceding Roland Garros. Organizers are still expected to announce three additional main-draw wild cards in the coming days, adding further depth to an already strong entry list.
Alongside Keys, Alexandrova, Fernandez and Samsonova, the tournament is also expected to feature players such as Hailey Baptiste and Clara Tauson. The concentration of top-level players should provide Mboko with immediate high-quality opposition as she looks to build momentum on clay.
For the Canadian teenager, Strasbourg is likely to serve less as a ranking opportunity and more as a chance to recover competitive rhythm after an interrupted European swing. With Roland Garros approaching, the tournament could play a significant role in determining how prepared Mboko will be entering the second Grand Slam of the season.
