Arthur Fils has moved quickly to calm concerns over his physical condition ahead of Roland Garros after retiring injured during his opening match at the Italian Open in Rome.
The Frenchman had been one of the standout performers of the clay-court season before the setback, building momentum with the biggest title of his career at the Barcelona Open and following it with a deep run at the Madrid Open.
At a moment when Jannik Sinner has established himself as the dominant figure on the ATP Tour — particularly following recent injury issues affecting Carlos Alcaraz — few young players have been viewed as capable of challenging the Italian consistently. Fils, given both his age and rapid development, has increasingly been mentioned among that group.
The 21-year-old has also dealt with physical setbacks throughout the early stages of his career. A significant injury suffered during Roland Garros 2025 sidelined him for several months and disrupted much of the remainder of his season before he eventually returned to full fitness.

Strong clay swing interrupted in Rome

Fils arrived in Rome in outstanding form after compiling a 22-6 record this season, including 13 victories in his previous 15 matches entering the Italian capital. His aggressive baseline game and improved physical consistency had positioned him as one of the most dangerous players outside the ATP elite heading into the second Grand Slam of the season.
The Frenchman captured the Barcelona Open title earlier this year, the most important clay-court trophy of his career so far, before reaching the semifinals of the Madrid Open for the first time. That run marked his deepest appearance at a Masters 1000 event and pushed him close to a maiden breakthrough into the ATP Top 10.

However, concerns quickly emerged during his Rome debut against local player Andrea Pellegrino. Fils retired after only a handful of games with the score at 0-4, later revealing that a hip issue had forced him to stop the match.
The timing immediately created uncertainty around his condition with Roland Garros only two weeks away. The Frenchman is expected to be one of the leading local hopes in Paris, particularly after the consistency he has shown throughout the clay swing.

“Everything came back clear”

Despite the initial fears, Fils later delivered a reassuring update through social media, indicating that medical tests had not revealed any serious damage and that the decision to stop in Rome had been precautionary.
The Frenchman explained that both he and his team preferred to avoid unnecessary risks at a critical stage of the season, especially with the French Open approaching rapidly. “Felt something during the match in Rome, so we decided to run all the necessary tests with the team. Everything came back clear.”
Fils also confirmed that he had already resumed work as he continues preparing for the clay-court major in Paris, where he could enter the tournament carrying genuine expectations for a deep run. “No need to take any risk at this stage of the season. Already back to work and fully focused on Paris. Thanks for all the messages and support.”
Currently ranked World No. 17, Fils remains one of the fastest-rising players on the ATP Tour. With significant ranking points available during the European clay season and favorable conditions in Paris, the Frenchman now appears set to continue building momentum at the tournament many inside French tennis believe could become his long-term breakthrough stage.
