Elena Rybakina received help from her trainer with a right-arm issue during her match against Sloane Stephens at the National Bank
Canadian Open (Omnium Banque Nationale) in Montreal.
World No. 4 Rybakina has had a successful run at the WTA 1000 event so far. The Kazakhstani player defeated 2020 Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady in her opening round, before going on to defeat 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens in straight sets.
However, there was a tense moment for Rybakina's fans during her most recent match, as at one point she had to be seen by her trainer to get help with what seemed to be an issue with her right arm.
Fans worried after injuries earlier this season
The moment was particularly worrying due to the fact that the 2022 Wimbledon champion was forced to withdraw from this year's French Open in the third round. Just minutes before her match against Sara Sorribes Tomo was set to take place, Rybakina had to pull out due to an upper respiratory illness.
This came after she was forced to withdraw from her third-round match against Coco Gauff at the Dubai Tennis Championships, and retired from her match against Beatriz Haddad Maia at the Stuttgart Open, citing a lower back injury both times.
In a video posted on social media of the recent incident in Canada, Rybakina's trainer can be seen moving her right arm into different positions to check where it hurts. Meanwhile, Rybakina remained seated throughout with a stoic expression on her face.
Rybakina pulls through to win the match
Despite the concerns, the 24-year-old was able to continue play and went on the win the match in 75 minutes, 6-3, 6-3. This victory occurred late at night as the match was delayed for five hours due to rain.
Rybakina, seeded third, will go on to face tenth seed Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-final. This is the first time in her career that Rybakina has reached the quarter-finals at the Canadian Open, and she will no doubt be hoping that her arm and shoulder problems don't bother her too much moving forward.
