World No. 2 Iga Swiatek was eliminated from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after falling to Mirra Andreeva 3-6, 3-6, exiting in the quarterfinals of the second WTA 1000 event of the season.
After the match, frustration was evident for the five-time Grand Slam champion as she avoided shaking hands with her coach, Wim Fissette. The Belgian took over as Swiatek’s coach in October 2024 and has experience working with several high-profile players, including Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber, and Naomi Osaka.
Just like at the Qatar Open a week earlier, Swiatek once again failed to defend her ranking points. In Doha, she reached the semifinals (where she was defending her title), and now, she exits in the quarterfinals, whereas last year she made the semis.
The lost points could prove costly in her bid to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking, especially as Aryna Sabalenka’s early exits in both tournaments had opened a window for the Pole to close the gap. However, instead of gaining ground, she has now fallen further behind her main rival.
Fissette was seen attempting to console Swiatek after the tough loss, raising his hand for a high-five. However, the Pole ignored the gesture and quickly walked toward the locker room in silence.
